My review of Galaga on...
Galaga, one of my favorite arcade games of all time and one of the best spaceship shooters ever. I always wanted my own Galaga arcade
machines but the cost of a full sized one was out of reach. Now thanks to the folks at My Arcade, I own a miniature version that plays just like the full sized but on a much smaller scale about 6" tall and no need for quarters.
The machine itself is put together really well, its shape is based on a full sized Galaga arcade cabinet with some minor differences. The side panel artwork and marquee are spot on. The screen size is roughly 2.5" high. Once I get immersed in gameplay, I forget that I'm Looking at a small screen. Could be cumbersome for some people but it doesn't bother me. The controls on the deck are the d-pad with removable joystick, fire button along with start and reset. The buttons, along with the joystick feel really great and are very responsive.
The game it self plays just like the real arcade version except you cant add credits, at least I think. I haven't tried pushing start numerous times.
Also on the back is a volume control but unlike a wheel, it is just a switch that goes from off to medium then high. Having it on high volume tends to cause sound distortion as the speaker inside is pretty tiny but I find that having it on medium is just the right volume setting.
To power the unit, it requires 4 AA batteries or by Micro-USB. I prefer to plug it into a wall since I can spend a significant amount of time playing and don't want to deal with draining batteries. The on/off switch is on the front of the unit and resembles the coin slot of a real cabinet. Just push it and the unit powers on, push it again and it powers off.
The only major drawback of this unit is that there is no save function. Yes, your high score saves as long as you keep playing after each game over with the unit on but once you shut off the unit the scores are gone. So I advise to jot down your scores if you want to.
Overall this mini version of Galaga is pretty neat. Definitely a must have for any retro game collector and I highly recommend picking one up.
